Open Office is good and free. Don't try Wordpad or Notepad. Microsoft Works is pretty ok and Office is great but you have to pay.

the only downfall of Open officer is it doesn't have a grammar checker, but i believe they can be modded in.

Microsoft has a grammar checker so you could get that. However you don't get all the stuff you do with OpenOffice
